Wood Gormley Principal’s Update

Sep 25 - Sep 29

Please join me in offering congratulations to Faris Wald, former Wood Gormley student, son of Ted and Anna Wald, who has been named a top 30 finalist in the 7th annual Broadcom MASTERS,® the nation’s most prestigious Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) middle school competition, founded and produced by the Society for Science & the Public. Faris will be competing for more than $100,000 in awards, including a top prize of $25,000.

Faris’s project is titled The Correlation between Solar Coronal Hole Occurrences and the Formation of Tropical and Extra-Tropical Cyclones. “I have been naturally curious about the strength of our sun's power and its true effect on our planet,” Faris says. He learned about different solar phenomena, and he became intrigued by coronal holes. Faris Wald will next compete in Washington, DC for the top award of $25,000 in late October after a rigorous competition that will test students’ abilities in STEM, critical thinking, communication, creativity and collaboration.
